It all started with a Daddy-Daughter hoedown Friday night at school. Isabella bobbed for apples, ate brownies, and learned how to throw a lasso. When they came home, Mark threw some hay that he'd stashed in his pocket on the kitchen floor, and said, "This is what it looked like." He then grabbed Isabella's hands and they danced while he sang "Achy, Breaky Heart".
This was the best we could do with the western gear: hiking boots and a vest for Mark, dressy boots and a jean skirt for Isabella.
On Saturday we drove up to El Dorado Hills to stay with the Stephens family. We squeezed in a trip to Apple Hill to have family pictures taken. We arrived in the late afternoon, so we had to rush around before the sun set, but I love it there. We ate apple donuts and ran around the orchards while Heather took pictures. I wished we lived closer so we could go more often.
Here's a special preview of what our family holiday card will look like this year.
Oh wait! That would be the Stephens family. Ours will be coming...
I loved our trip for so many reasons. Here's one: Brooke and I often talk about how we lucked out having kids so close in age. Isabella and Daysha are 8 months apart. And this was Sunday morning. I went out to the back patio to see what they were doing, and they were just sitting there--conversing--all about Halloween and trick-or-treating. I went back in the house to get my camera, and when I came back out, they were telling stories. Daysha's was about a trip to McDonald's. Isabella's was about a house that got destroyed in a storm.
Matthew and Leo are 4 months apart. Matthew decided to take Leo's car for a little joy ride.
Leo didn't like that and came out ready with his broom and best scowl.
(Actually, he was just playing with the broom and squinting from the sun light)
They climbed the stairs together...
and took a bath. Best buddies.
After all the kids went to sleep, we grown ups stayed up and played Loaded Question and Awkward Family Photos (the game), which was fun because Mark and I never do couple-things with other couples. Mark and I also helped deplete Brooke and Aaron's left over Halloween candy supply by at least a third. 'Cuz that's what friends do.
We finished our weekend at the Wentzel's for dinner. I can't wait 'til we go back!

A Few of My Favorite Things (Fall Edition)
The vineyards and their changing colors.
For some reason this year, I really noticed, and I think it's beautiful!
Stacks of fluffy pancakes (and being so impressed with their fluffiness, that a photo must be taken)
Isabella photography.
(I especially love those little toes that crept in.)
Isabella homework.
Ok. Kindergarten has been a challenge. She loves it, BUT 5 hours of school, 5 days a week is exhausting--for all of us. It's been quite the transition, I must say, and I have developed some serious opinions about the direction of kindergarten in our educational system, but it is what it is and we all must survive it.
Isabella has taken off with reading, but struggles with writing, so little gems like this are lovely. Her homework was to draw picture of things that begin with the letter "F". She chose "find" and drew a picture of her looking for something. Next was the word "fall". I got excited because it is Fall and I, too, love Fall!! She wrote the word! And drew a tree! And then she drew herself FALLing out of the tree. (Wrong "fall", mom.) After that was "fish" and finally "frog".
I said, "Do you know how spell frog? What letter does it start with?"
She writes an "r".
"Isabella, what letter does 'frog' start with?"
She writes an "i". And then a "b", "i", and "t". ("ribit").
Brother/sister reading time.
Brother was quickly banished to the other side of the couch.
The dinosaur/animal parades I stumble upon throughout the house.
Dress up with friends. This is Nina--wearing princess shoes and a stethoscope.
Isabella and Maya (princesses, moms, artists, and whatever else they were pretending to be.)

CinderBella
Once upon a time there was a lovely and smart and determined little girl named CinderBella. She was so social that she could even befriend mice and the birds, if she wanted to. Each morning the sliver of light shining through her black-out curtain in her bedroom woke CinderBella from her sweet dreams.
CinderBella lived with her sometimes-mean Mom and sometimes-mean Dad (or so she thought) who treated her like a servant. She was expected to make her bed! and clear her dishes! and get dressed for the day! (which felt more like being responsible for all the cooking and sewing, and washing and scrubbing) Her sometimes-annoying little brother Matthew never did any work, except make more messes.
One day, CinderBella's parents announced that there would be a Grand Halloween Party at the church and that all the children in Napa were invited.
"That means I can go!" CinderBella cried. "Imagine all the candy!"
"You can go," said CinderBella's mom, "if you get all your work done and if you can find something to wear,"
"Oh Thank you!" said CinderBella.
She quickly ran to her room, and pulled a costume out of her dress up box.
"This was my Minnie Mouse costume from last year!" She said to her many stuffed animals and dolls. "Isn't it lovely?!"
Just then her sometimes-mean mother said, "CinderBella, clean up your trains and put away your art supplies!"
"But I just cleaned them up yesterday!" CinderBella bellowed.
"Well, I need you to clean them up today, " said her mom, which sounded more to CinderBella like: "and dust the drapes and clean the windows and finish the sewing!"
CinderBella felt sad (and a little mad). CinderBelly, do this! CinderBelly, do that!
"I will never have time to find a costume now, and if I don't have a costume, I won't be able to get candy at the party!"
"Poor CinderBelly, " her stuffed animals and dolls agreed.
Finally a few days later, it was time to prepare a costume to wear to the Grand Halloween Party.
"I think your Minnie Mouse dress is too small now, " said CinderBella's mom. "You will not be able to wear it to the party."
Discouraged, CinderBella ran outside and climbed to the top of her favorite rock. She was so disappointed she didn't notice (or hear for that matter) that a kind-hearted woman had driven up the driveway in her hybrid car. The woman was CinderBella's fairy Grandmother!
CinderBella told her Nana all about her too-small dress and how she wouldn't be able to trick-or-treat at the Grand Halloween Party if she didn't have a costume.
"Good heavens, child! We can't have that!" exclaimed her Nana. Everything CinderBella needed to prepare for the party was right there in her Nana's Prius!
"Look what I found for you at Costco!" Nana said as she waved her hand over a beautiful Size 5/6 pink and purple Rapunzel costume (complete with a crown and tea set). Bibbidi, Bobbidi, boo!
CinderBella had never been happier. The Fairy Grandmother was very pleased.
As the day of the Grand Halloween Party neared, CinderBella came down with a terrible cold--Croup to be exact. Once again, CinderBella was disheartened. She tried to remember her sweet dreams of baskets full of candy, but she felt oh, so awful. She didn't think her dreams would come true. Her sometimes-mean mother made her rest most of the day of the Grand Party, which was very hard for CinderBella because she was so excited to go. By early afternoon, CinderBella was quite fatigued, but nothing would stop her from going to the party!
It was finally time to get dressed in her costume. CinderBella put on her brand new Size 5/6 pink and purple Rapuzel costume. Her mom helped to pull it over her head and into place. But CinderBella quickly scrunched up her face.
"It doesn't feel right, " she complained, as she tugged on the top part of her dress.
Knowing exactly where this was going and that CinderBella's patience would run out fast on account of her not feeling well, her sometimes-mean mom acted quickly and pinned the top of her dress for her.
"It still doesn't feel right, " she began to cry.
"Would you like to put on a different costume from your dress up box?"
"Yes" said CinderBella, as her mom hung up her brand new costume in the closet and pulled out an old, wrinkled, hand-me-down, Cinderella dress from the box.
Her mom then placed the crown on her head.
"It doesn't feel right!"
The crown went into the box.
"What about shoes?' asked her mom. "Church shoes to go with your dress?"
"They don't feel right!"
"Sneakers with socks?"
"They don't feel right!"
"Ok." said CinderBella's mom, feeling like she was in need of a little magic herself. "Cinderella dress, pinned on the top. No crown. Sneakers without socks. Let's go!" She reminded herself that perfect costume fittings for virus-free children with no sensory issues, only happened in fairy tales.
CinderBella was finally ready for the party.
"Now remember, 'Bella, " said her sometimes-mean mom, "we are leaving the party at the stroke of 8:30, before you and everyone else in our family turn into pumpkins."
"Ok, Mama, " said CinderBella, and off they went.
The party was CinderBella's dream come true. A Halloween Movie! Hot dogs! Nachos! and of course, oodles of candy from trick-or-treating. CinderBella and her family left the party promptly at 8:30 p.m. and CinderBella lived on, happily, overcame her croup, and ate lots and lots of candy.

The End
Cuddling up under blankets to watch the Halloween movie
Getting ready for trunk-or-treating.
Picture with Ally Witch, who we learned that night had also missed several days of school due to Croup.
Cinderella and Belle and their bags of candy.
What was Matthew for Halloween, you ask? He wore a skeleton onsie and had his walker.
Skeleton + walker = Dead Man Walking.
(no disrespect intended)
(no disrespect intended)
Mustang Stampede!
Isabella participated in her first jog-a-thon at school. We went all out
and asked all of one family (mine) to pledge money (thanks mom and
dad!). She ran a total of 33 laps! Matthew and I cheered her on.
This fundraiser is serious stuff. I actually overheard another parent yell the following to their 5 year old: "Walking?! Why are you walking? You're losing money!" They were totally serious.
Her favorite part was the frozen yogurt sticks and granola bars after the running part was over. My favorite part was hanging around afterward and getting to see Isabella at recess playing with her friends. They set up an obstacle course using hula hoops. Matthew tried to make it more challenging for them by lifting up the hoops...

The best thing was me witnessing how caring the yard duty teacher was to Isabella after she took a spill on the pavement. The teacher had no idea I was sitting right there watching. I thought Isabella might be pouring on a little bit of the drama, knowing I was sitting there, so I intentionally sat back a bit to see if she'd get up on her own. But Mrs. Morris swooped in and picked her up, gave her a hug and a band aid (even though she didn't even have a scrape). I thanked Mrs. Morris later. I'm so glad to know that there are teachers like her, loving and nurturing my kid when she's at school.
Sycamore St. 2013
The trick-or-treaters are ready. This time poor Matthew had croup, but what better activity to do, than to get out in the cold night air and do a little candy hunting? (His doctor even recommended it.) This time CinderBella dressed up in her blue dress, church shoes, and started the night with a crown (which was quickly banished).
Brave...
But totally spooked by the giant tarantula that jumped out at her.
Father and Son (in law)
Isabella did her thing. This year she went to all houses, even if there were no obvious signs that they wanted trick-or-treaters. She still knocked on their doors and then looked in their windows. We had to put a stop to that. Brave...
But totally spooked by the giant tarantula that jumped out at her.
Larry's Produce
This year we did our Halloween prep right, and shopped Larry's Produce (in Fairfield) for all our harvest needs.
(All things pumpkin, great and small.)
Larry's knows kids all right, and provides a pit of filled with corn kernels, a hay bale tunnel, and lots of things to climb on and jump off of--and for the parents--produce with prices that can't be beat!
Where else in the Napa Valley (area) can you get pomegranates for 75 cents! A 2-pound bag of oranges for a dollar! Or brussel sprouts on the stalk!
So shop Larry's for all your Halloween Prep/Produce needs (next year) and you too, can decorate your fireplace, deemed unfit for fires, like this:
A few nights and one haircut later, we carved Isabella's first-ever jack-o-lantern. And placed it in the window where everyone (meaning only us because we are out in the country and who's going to see it?) could be totally spooked by our scariness.
We made some caramel apples, too.
